The choice of paint and paint colors in historic buildings helped define the original mood or spirit for that building. Many historic buildings express themselves uniquely with their interior paint finishes. The wide variety of historic painting projects that we will undertake in our restoration projects include encaustic painting, graining and marbleizing, decorative painting, fresco, and trompe l’oeil.
Proper assessment and diagnosis is a key first step to a successful quality historic paint preservation, rehabilitation or restoration. Proper handling or abatement is important with old paints, as many of the paints used prior to 1978 contained lead. Once it is determined whether one is attempting preservation, rehabilitation or restoration of the paint, we work with specialists who employ sophisticated equipment to determine the necessary details to ensure a quality, long-lasting paint job.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Westcott House
Springfield, Ohio
Restoration of the Burton J. Westcott house, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, transformed a deteriorating structure into a dazzling house museum. The house, built in 1908, is the only example of Wright’s prairie-style architecture in Ohio. Durable Slate served as the construction manager for this restoration – taking the building from an altered and dilapidated state and returning it to its former glory. Historical painting was crucial to the complete interior restoration. |
