Fair Street Christian Church
Springfield, Ohio
Our award winning job on this 19th century church began with structural stabilization to the steeple. Landings and stairs that had long ago deteriorated and were missing when we arrived were rebuilt to original. Following this interior structural work, we restored the interior and exterior of the masonry, including re-pointing. Other restoration work on this church included:
- new black, green, and red patterned slate roof on entire roof including steeple
- new copper gutters and downspouts
- replaced all the protective storm windows over the stained glass windows with new windows that we custom designed to improve lighting and security
- replicated and replaced ornate windows original to the building
- replicated and installed extensive decorative copper work all over roof, steeple, gable ends, louvers, and soffits
The structural elements of the steeple were stabilized before work began. The original decorative metal work was badly deteriorated. The old pieces were precisely duplicated in new copper. As the metal work was completed, the steeple was slated with new black, green and red slate. Asphalt shingles were removed from the main church roof, which was slated with the same pattern as the steeple.

Two floors were added inside the steeple as part of the structural stabilization efforts. Scaffolding was set up along the entire steeple during the restoration so that the crew worked efficiently and safely. |

Ed De Long holds one of the old, deteriorated pieces of metal.
The old metal was dismantled and brought to our shop for duplication. |
 |
Other custom fabricated components included the louvers and finials shown here. Each was reproduced from the original old metal that was removed from the steeple. The large finial now graces the top of the steeple. |

Soffit and rake metal were replicated in copper |

All of the components were hand soldered for waterproof assembly. |
 |
New slate was installed on the main church roof to match the pattern on the steeple. New copper roof vents were also fabricated and installed. |

The window on this gable wall was replaced, along with the surrounding decorative copper elements. This window protects the original stained glass windows. |
